Samantha's Story
"When I say, thank you, it comes from my heart. Sometimes those simple words don't feel like they're enough, but all I can say is thank you!"
Originally from New York, Samantha moved to Central Florida to start a new life with her boyfriend and their infant son. However, over the course of a few months, her boyfriend became distant and eventually abandoned them with no support system at all.
“He
left us to be with another woman,” Samantha says. “I had no job here, and I
didn’t know anyone. That’s how we ended up homeless.”
For two agonizing weeks, Samantha and her son Samuel slept in their car. Samantha says that the only way she got through this trying time was by pulling strength from her love for her son.
“When I felt discouraged or like giving up, I just thought about Samuel,” she says. “He’s the reason I fought to survive. I’m the only person he has in this world, so I knew I needed help to get us out of that situation.”
She called the United Way Help Line and was referred to a Housing First program called Rapid ReHousing that quickly places families into homes and provides supportive services. That is how she met her Housing Manager, Brenda, at the Coalition.
“I was so happy. I couldn’t believe it. After living in our car, I was starting to lose hope until they called me,” Samantha recalls.
Brenda helped Samantha and Samuel move into an apartment, and she continues to support them with everything they need to get their life back on track.
“No matter what I’m going through, I’m thankful for the Coalition. I have a home for my son, and that is everything.”
Thank you for being a part of Samantha’s story. Because of compassionate people like you, families and individuals are able to turn to the Coalition in their time of need and access crucial resources to end their crisis of homelessness.
