Holding On for Kingsly: A Mother’s Fight for Home
Celebrating the Resilience of Mothers this Mother's Day

This Mother’s Day, Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida honors the perseverance, love, and determination of the many mothers who walk through our doors each day—mothers like Erin.
When Erin and her 4-year-old son, Kingsly, found themselves without a place to call home, she never imagined how quickly life could change.
For 10 years, Erin and her partner shared a life together, raising their son and building a home. As a stay-at-home mom, Erin dedicated herself to caring for Kingsly full time—homeschooling him to ensure he received the structure and attention he needed, especially as a child with autism.
But when their relationship ended, Erin and Kingsly were left with the apartment, and Erin could no longer afford rent without support. Despite being seasonally employed, her income was not enough to cover the cost of housing and essentials.
Within a short window, Erin and Kingsly were asked to leave the apartment. With nowhere else to go, they spent two weeks sleeping in their car—a heartbreaking and frightening experience for any parent.
“It was hard for a while, staying in my car. . .sometimes I didn’t eat to ensure he had food.”
Thanks to the compassion of supporters like you, the Coalition was able to step in.
Through our Center for Women and Families, Erin and Kingsly were given more than shelter. They received dignity, support, and a chance to rebuild. Erin found a safe place for her son, enrolled him in school, and began taking steps toward long-term stability.
“I needed to get my son to a safe place; with a shelter over his head… food in his belly. And that’s what the Coalition gave me. A safe place for my son.”
Today, Erin is working two jobs, and she and Kingsly are preparing to move into a two-bedroom duplex—a permanent home filled with promise and possibility.
Every day, the Coalition helps mothers like Erin turn crisis into hope. You make that possible. Because of you, families are not only surviving—they’re thriving.
This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the courage of mothers and thank you for standing with them. Happy Mother's Day from the Coalition.
