From Desperation to Hope: How You Helped Rescue a Family in Unsafe Living Conditions
Responding to the Howard Johnson Hotel Eviction
When the Howard Johnson Hotel on I-Drive was abruptly shut down after being deemed unfit for living conditions, more than 200 people — including children — were told to leave immediately.
Many families had nowhere to go. Thanks to you, our Community Outreach for Families team was ready to respond.
Christopher and his family had already endured years of instability, moving from motel to motel just to keep a roof over their heads. They weren’t just a couple with a child — they were seven people crammed into a tiny two-bed motel room: Christopher, his wife, his mother, his brother, his sister, and two young children. “We’d been staying in motels for two years” Christopher explains.
Conditions at the Howard Johnson were dire. Christopher shares, “They had rats…running around...they were jumping out the wall. Eating [our] clothes.” The air conditioner barely worked. For seven people living in one room, even basic routines like bathing, preparing food, and keeping the children safe became a daily battle.
Despite working part-time at a local supermarket, Christopher had just handed over his entire paycheck for another week at the hotel when the family was told they had to leave by 10 a.m.
“If y’all didn’t help, we were going to be in a bad situation,” Christopher said.
That’s when you made a change.
Thanks to your support, Coalition staff was able to immediately step in, verifying employment, transporting the family with their belongings, covering hotel costs, and supplying hygiene kits, diapers, blankets, and school supplies.
Christopher’s Mother, Cheryl, shared, “The cover, the pillows, all the things that they supplied, it came right on time like a blessing in disguise...Thank you so much.”
Your generosity didn’t just provide temporary relief — it created hope.
With your support, Christopher and his family have secured a three-bedroom apartment near his workplace and will soon be moving into a fully furnished home. “When [our Housing Specialist] said that they can help us get an apartment...I felt great. I was happy because we really needed a blessing. That was like the biggest blessing that anybody can ever ask for,” Christopher said.
Because of you, a family of seven who feared homelessness now feels peace for the first time in years. “We’re highly grateful,” Christopher shared. “Look at us ...a couple of months from now, we’re going to be a different family...Thank you so much.”
