Hilda's Story
For years, Hilda had always dreamed of moving from her small town in Virginia to a larger city with more opportunities to start a better life for herself.
“My boyfriend, at the time, convinced me that Florida was the perfect place to move to,” Hilda says. “He told me that there are so many jobs out there that, once you start applying, people will knock down your door just to get you to work for them.”
To Hilda’s astonishment, her boyfriend was right. As soon as she began filling out applications for hotel housekeeping positions, she immediately started receiving interview requests and job offers before she even started living in Florida. Knowing that this was the right moment to follow her dreams, she left her old life behind and moved to Orlando.
When they arrived, they searched for an apartment to rent from, but quickly realized that the costs were beyond what they could reasonably afford. The couple decided to stay at a motel until they could figure out something more permanent.
“After a few months, I realized that my boyfriend didn’t move here for the same reasons that I did. I came down here to improve myself and he was getting involved in other stuff. Eventually, I had no choice but to end the relationship, and move to a different room,” Hilda says.
Hilda knew that she wasn’t going to be able to pay for the $800 a month room by herself and was worried about what she was going to do. That’s when she remembered that her friend’s mother was looking for someone to rent a room in her house.
“While I was grateful to have a place to live, it was one of the worst experiences of my entire life,” she says. “The lady was extremely overbearing and had no boundaries when it came to my personal space or belongings. I caught her going through my stuff one day when she thought I wasn’t around.”
After a few weeks, Hilda couldn’t endure her living situation any longer. The only solution she could think of was to reach out to a shelter to see if they had any available space.
When she called the Coalition’s Intake Center, she spoke with a Housing Counselor who helped her explore available options outside of the homeless services system.
“I was amazed because I was expecting to spend the next few months in the shelter, but they were telling me that they could help me find a place to live within a couple of days!” says Hilda.
Her Housing Counselor, Andrea Alexander, went over her budget and connected her with a landlord who had an available room to rent close to her new job.
“I’m so happy and content with my life now,” Hilda says. “I just needed someone to help me problem solve so I could move forward. I will tell everyone I know about the amazing services that the Coalition provides and how they have helped me.”
Thank you for making Hilda’s story possible. Through a collaborative partnership with Orange County Government, our diversion services prevent individuals and families from entering the homeless services system by helping them explore other immediate housing arrangements while ensuring shelter beds are utilized for those most in need.
