Virgil's Story
“If it weren’t for the Coalition, I would not have my kids right now.”
“In January of 2018, I was dropping my kids off at their
mother’s house after a regular weekend visit and that’s when the most
unexpected thing happened,” Virgil says. “We knocked on the door and she came
out screaming that she doesn’t want the kids anymore.”
After the initial shock, Virgil called law enforcement who explained that if he doesn’t take the kids, they would have to arrest both of them for abandonment.
Knowing that he would do everything to protect and care for his kids, Virgil took them back in his car and drove to his friend’s house for the night so he could start to figure everything out.
“The problem I had was that I had nowhere to take them because I’m homeless,” says Virgil, explaining that after paying child support, he used all of his leftover earnings for a motel room on the weekends he had with his kids.
When their time at his friend’s house was nearing its end, his next priority was to find housing so he could continue to keep custody of his children.
As Virgil began to search for programs that could help, he had a difficult time finding places that accepted single fathers with children. That’s when he was glad to hear that the Coalition’s Center for Women and Families welcomed families like his.
“Being able to have our own room has been the best thing for me and my children,” says Virgil. “Those four walls and the help that we are getting from our case manager have allowed us to become closer than ever before.”
Currently, Virgil and his three children are able to have a safe place to stay and the supportive services they need while they await housing in the community.
“We will never forget the help we’ve received from the Coalition. Because of them, I can look forward to the new year and know that we have a brighter future ahead.”
