Angela's Story
Just one year ago, Angela felt hopeless, on the verge of giving up.
After being injured in a car accident, she was unable to work and lost her full-time job. Then, to make matters worse, she was forced to move out of her room rental, because her landlord found someone who would pay more per week.
“I was only given two days’ notice,” Angela says. “I even offered to pay more, but it was already too late. I stayed at a motel for as long as I could, but at $100 a day, it was too expensive. That’s how I ended up sleeping in my car. I would park at a nearby church because it was the only place I trusted, but I couldn’t sleep at all.”
During this incredibly difficult time, Angela clung to the one thing that kept her moving forward: she was pregnant.
But, after being turned away from several shelters, her situation grew increasingly dire. Not only was sleeping in her car uncomfortable, it was quickly turning into a dangerous situation. Her legs and feet were severely swollen due to a lack of circulation.
“I desperately needed somewhere to go, and my prayers were answered when the Coalition called to say that they had a bed for me,” says Angela. “It wasn’t a moment too soon, because the doctor at the hospital told me that I was at risk of getting a blood clot.”
While at the Coalition, she gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Aleyna, who is now seven months old. “My daughter was my motivation, because I never want her to go through what I’ve gone through.”
“I learned a lot from this whole experience,” she says, remembering her time at the Coalition. “Being there humbled me and helped me get to where I am now.”
Her housing case manager, Ms. Brenda, helped her find a place to live through the Coalition’s Rapid ReHousing Program. For the last six months, Brenda has been working with Angela to set goals for the future with encouragement and support along the way.
“She’s helped me budget my time and money, which is a big deal for me,” says Angela, adding that for the first time in years, she paid her bills early - a big step from where she was a year ago.
“I am so grateful to be living the life that I have now. In addition to being a mother to my beautiful daughter, I’m working as a veteran case manager, helping homeless individuals get into transitional housing. I’m also in school, getting my bachelor’s degree in pre-counseling and taking classes to go towards my master’s degree.”
“I tell my clients, ‘I don’t want to hear any excuses. I know where you’re coming from. You can use this as a building block,’” she says. “I love what I do. I love helping people.”
Thank you for being a part of Angela and Aleyna’s story. Because of your compassion and generosity, families and individuals can turn to the Coalition in their time of need. In the past year alone, 1,127 Coalition guests moved from one of programs into permanent housing.
