A commitment to helping others that has spanned over a decade
Around campus he is known as “Coach Mark”. And this month we are celebrating 10 years of his involvement with the Coalition.
It all started for Mark on March 6, 2011 when his mother passed away.
“I felt a tugging on my heart to use the talents and skills God had blessed me with to leave some sort of mark on this world. So I started coordinating mini-food drives at work. I would wake up early on Saturday morning to cook and feed the homeless. One Saturday, a police officer informed me that that I needed a permit to do so and he (kindly) suggested I look into the Coalition for the Homeless. So I did... and it changed my life forever!”.
With this newfound purpose and a cause to dedicate his energy towards, Mark quickly got to work.
“When I went to the volunteer orientation the Director had such great zeal for what the Co-Co does and I was infected by her dedication and call to service. I also appreciated that the Coalition gave me an opportunity to directly impact the lives of youth residents in a creative endeavor for which I had passion.... kids and football”.
In July 2011 Mark started a flag football program for our school aged residents. This program eventually expanded to include a variety of activities like mentoring and emotional support. And it became a tradition Mark has continued throughout his time with the Coalition, despite any obstacles that got in his way.
“I didn't let COVID stop my passion to serve... I have remained close with several former residents and 3 Saturdays a month, I take them to the park or the pool”.
Mark has done more than just volunteer around the Coalition’s campus though. He’s become a regular fundraiser for our annual Doug Spencer Golf Challenge and is a Journey Home Legacy Society donor.
Over the years Mark has donated and fundraised more than $37,000!
"My volunteering quickly grew into supporting the
Coalition financially. The statistic that sold me... it takes $25 a day
to provide food, shelter, and services to a child. They do an amazing job
of allocating resources to critical areas to foster growth and financial
self-sufficiency - they don't just provide a roof and food... they rehabilitate
lives.”
One of the
things Mark has learned during his time with the Coalition is the impact we make
on our guests, as well as those who support us.
“I never realized the impact that my time there would have. Not just on the children that I serve, but on my own life. We sometimes wander through life; not understanding our purpose and even self-worth at times. At the Coalition, I learned who I was and who I could be. I was renamed from unsure, wandering guy to Coach Mark. I've watched kids flourish under the structure and attention that the Coalition provides. To be a small part of the big things that happen at The Coalition is the greatest and most rewarding undertaking of my life”.
Mark has become such a blessing to the Coalition staff and our guests. He’s left a lasting impression on our lives and we will forever be grateful for his decade of support.
