Madison's Story
Three-year-old Madison lived in a van with her mom Stacey, her older brother, and their three dogs. This cramped living arrangement deprived Madison of the safety and security of an apartment or a house. Living in a van meant that Madison had no space to play, explore, or even really move around. Fortunately, their family qualified for Rapid Rehousing, a program that provides short-term rental assistance to help homeless families move into housing and rebuild stability. The program also provided transitional housing at a dog-friendly motel during the application process.
While their family never spent a night sleeping at the Coalition, they were still able to participate in the programs and services offered by the Coalition. Stacey enrolled Madison in the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida’s Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC), which meets the child-care and early-learning needs of children ages six weeks through pre-kindergarten whose families are experiencing homelessness.
Once Madison started the program, ECDC Director Juanita Real noticed that she had suffered
delays during the months they lived in the van and lagged developmentally behind
her peers. “She didn’t understand the difference between appropriate personal
space and how to use wide open space,” Juanita says. “She didn’t understand
sharing because she was worried whether she’d have something later.” Since Madison's first day of school at the ECDC, the nurturing, professional ECDC
teachers have worked lovingly and consistently with her.
Madison and her family – including the dogs – have now moved into their
own apartment and are rebuilding their lives. Madison has thrived during her
months at ECDC, making such rapid progress that Juanita moved her into the
4-year-old’s class. The ECDC staff have helped her to overcome the effects of
homelessness and prepared her to join her peers at her local school. What was once a girl filled with fear and on the verge of falling behind, is now replaced by a smiling ball of joy in the classroom.
“They key to our program is flexibility and structure,” Juanita says. “Our goal is to have happy goodbyes – to see the students and their families succeed and move out of the homeless season of their lives.”
Thank you for being a part of Madison's story. Each day, countless individuals in the Central Florida community reach out to the Coalition for help. Through our programs like the Early Childhood Development Center, the Coalition is able to respond to the diverse needs of those during their crisis of homelessness. Now, Madison has the opportunities to live out her life like any other kid.
