A Mother Before Anything Else
"Homeless Shelter". Those were the two words Ria googled immediately after a violent altercation with a new partner. They had recently fled to Florida with Ria's two younger kids after her home was burned down in the California wildfires. "I had a beautiful custom built home in the woods, it was filled with my art and creativity. Being in nature offered such an escape from the world, that home was everything I wanted". Ria managed to build that home for herself after leaving her ex-husband and his harmful family.
But things were not easy in California. After her divorce Ria tried to enter the homeless system in California and was repeatedly denied, "They told me I wasn't 'qualifiable' for programs. One shelter said they couldn't help me because I didn't have any broken teeth or bones". She struggled for a bit to find stability for herself and her kids, but Ria was dedicated to providing the best for them. "I will do anything for my children, there is nothing more important to me in this world than them", she says, "I was once told I'd never be able to have kids, so to have these miracles in my life is such a blessing. I'm just so incredibly proud of them".
Eventually, Ria was able to build her dream home out in the woods. Things were going well with her children and things seemed promising. But then the fires started. The home she worked so hard to build out in the woods was destroyed along with most of her personal belongings. With little time to escape they had to quickly evacuate. Not sure of where to turn, Ria and a friend who was also impacted by the fires formed a relationship. Together, with her two younger children, they fled to Florida in hopes of a better opportunity.
Ria was working with an engineering firm before the start of the pandemic. "I was designing zero carbon communities that would be fully sustainable, our firm was building for the future". Then the pandemic hit and she was let go from her job. After moving to Florida with her new partner things started to get worse, he was not able to handle the responsibilities of raising children and things turned violent. Ria was assaulted by her partner and was kicked out of their house that same day, "He told me to throw whatever I could into a bag and whatever I couldn't take with me he was destroying. I felt so dehumanized in that moment". Scared and unsure of where to turn, she googled "Homeless Shelter" and contacted the Coalition. When she was informed that beds were available she immediately called a ride and showed up with a handful of bags and her children. "I was really worried up until the first night, but I met an older woman also staying at the Coalition and she comforted me. Many of the families started sharing clothes and other items of theirs that we needed. Even just walking down the hallway, to have a staff member say hello or ask how I'm doing, it makes me feel seen. I feel valued again."
Throughout everything, Ria remains a committed and passionate mother. "I am proud to say that I got to protect their childhoods, I did everything I could to raise them right". Her eldest son is pursuing an Astro Physics degree in California on a full ride scholarship, her second son is about to deploy into the military with the dreams of becoming a dentist, and her daughter will soon finish high school and hopes to become a psychiatrist. Ria was recently approved for an auto loan and is in the process of finding rapid rehousing for her and her daughter.
Thank you for being a part of her journey. Over the years, we've had remarkable mothers come through our programs. Women who've sacrificed so much. Women who've bravely escaped abusive relationships. Women who are bettering themselves through educational programs and job training. Women, who in the face of adversity, know that the word "mother" defines them far more than their experience with homelessness.
