Jertha's Story
It all started for Jertha about two years ago. She was dating a man she thought she’d spend the rest of her life with. But sadly, that fairytale turned into a nightmare of abuse and he became more and more aggressive.
Social services became routinely involved in their situation. Finally, things reached a breaking point and Jertha did what she had to do to protect her children. She packed up their belongings and not knowing where to turn, began living in her car with her kids.
From the decision to leave her abusive relationship to creating a path forward for them, Jertha's first and foremost concern was the safety and well-being of her children. She used to “pay people to let me cook so that my kids could still have a hot meal.” Jertha says she “began to pray and I asked God to just show me a way and that's when I came in contact with you guys.”
Once connected with the Coalition, Jertha learned about our Rapid Rehousing program, which places families with children in housing in the community and provides case management and other support as they work towards self-sufficiency. Jertha was overjoyed to learn that this program would help them transition directly to an apartment, never needing to enter shelter. She says, “If it wasn't for you guys, I don't know where I’d be, well, I do know...I'd be in my car.”
Today, Jertha and her kids have a roof over their heads, warm meals on the table, comfortable beds to sleep in, and something less tangible, but invaluable...hope. With her Rapid Rehousing Case Manager Colleen encouraging her every step of the way, she's found a better job and is going back to school to complete her GED. Her children are making friends in their new neighborhood. And Jertha was even able to throw a birthday party for her kids -- complete with matching family T-shirts -- something she's never been able to do before.
Since becoming a part of the Coalition's Rapid Rehousing program, Jertha feels like she has been given a “second chance at life.
Thank you for your continued support, which makes second chances like this possible every day.
