Mr. Simmons' Story
Mr. Simmons is a hardworking man in construction, even though he’s now a grandfather, he also maintains court custody of his three nephews who he’s been helping to raise. For months Mr. Simmons was searching for places to rent in Orlando for him and his nephews. Yet as many seeking homes in Orlando know, the market is vicious with ever increasing prices and limited options to choose from. Unfortunately, Mr. Simmons only earned enough from his job to afford low income housing options.
He recalled how, “it was so challenging to find a place. I’d call and there’d already be five other families waiting to apply. Whenever I finally did find somewhere, they’d say to call back in two weeks once I raised enough money, but by that point it’d be gone to some other family that paid upfront” . For someone like Mr. Simmons, who does not earn much, it’s nearly impossible to have the large amount of money necessary to pay a security deposit saved up in advance.
Time kept passing and he was becoming worried he'd never find a home. Mr. Simmons was eventually able to save over $1,700 for a deposit on a place he was excited to move his family into. He even said he had a great conversation over the phone with the leasing manager, “I told them about my boys and how important this was for us. They told me how excited they were for us to be moving in” . This excitement quickly turned into worry when the leasing office didn’t answer, then panic as he realized he’d been scammed out of all his money by a fake rental company. Now, with no home to move into and no money, Mr. Simmons biggest fear was setting in: becoming homeless.
Mr. Simmons reached out to 211 during this time of crisis, which connected him to the Coalition. Once he contacted the Coalition through our Intake and Diversion Center, he went through our intake process and became a client of our Diversion Program. This initiative, launched in 2018 in partnership with Orange County Government, helps homeless individuals and families find housing options outside the shelter system. Our team of Diversion Housing Counselors work with individuals and families to determine their needs and what immediate options are available, including finding permanent housing or facilitating conflict resolution and negotiations between clients and their family members, friends, or previous landlords to restore housing.
During Mr. Simmons initial evaluation, it was determined that all he needed was financial help securing an apartment. He already had a job but could not manage the extreme costs of moving. That simple, but daunting barrier was the only thing in the way of him and his family having a home. Mr. Simmons was then connected with one of our housing counselors, Andrea, who worked with him during every step of the process back to stable housing. Andrea taught Mr. Simmons how to search for reliable homes and avoid scams like the one he fell victim to. Working together, she helped him select a new rental unit and the Coalition covered the initial costs like his security deposit to assist with moving in.
“Andrea was a huge help in getting me back into housing, she helped keep me calm and made sure I always did things the right way” , Mr. Simmons said.
Now, Mr. Simmons and his nephews are back on the right track.
Since the Coalition helped with his security deposit their family is able to
start moving into their new home. They’re even collecting new
furniture and decorations to fill the space. Mr. Simmons told us, “There’s no
telling how long it would have been before I got into a home if it wasn’t for
the Coalition, they helped bring us back together as a family”.
Thank you for being a part of Mr. Simmons story. Just last month, the Coalition successfully diverted 168 people in similar experiences to Mr. Simmons. That's 168 people who did not have to spend a night sleeping at the shelter.
