Offering a Hand Up During COVID-19
Charitable giving provides them the hand up they need.
I’m sure you’re aware that hourly-wage workers in our tourism-dependent economy have been especially hard-hit by the pandemic. That’s why community giving is so important right now.
Let me give you an example of how the kindness of giving has made all the difference -- for Adam and Teresa and their four great kids.
Adam had a decent job as an electrician here in Orlando. Then the pandemic hit . . .
Adam was laid off. And with things shut down, he couldn’t find work anywhere. It didn’t take long for money to run out and they lost their home. They stayed with a friend in an extended-stay hotel in the area. It was crowded and uncomfortable.
And while they may not have looked like it, they were homeless
.
Four kids, no home, no job, and no prospects. Can you imagine how terrifying it was for them?
Then something good happened. A friend told them about the Coalition for the Homeless. A place that can help you get back on your feet, even in the most difficult times.
They became our guests in late April. It wasn’t easy. The family needed to stay in one of our quarantine areas for the first two weeks -- a safety measure we took for all our guests at the time.
After the quarantine period, they immediately went to work with their Housing Specialist, Elizabeth, on getting back into employment -- and a permanent home. Clearly, the first step was to get Adam back to work. It was a daunting challenge, with so many others desperately searching for the few jobs available. But he was determined, and with Elizabeth’s help, he had some promising job leads.
Shortly after he found a full-time job. In his field as an electrician! Now they needed to find a place to live.
I’d also like to tell you about Melissa. She’s another person who has our donors to thank for the change in her life...
Melissa was in a physically abusive relationship. She didn’t know what to do until the day her young daughter witnessed a violent incident. “This is not acceptable,” she thought. She knew she had to flee.
With her two kids, Melissa came to Orlando, where her mother lived. It was difficult, because her mother was fighting cancer.
“I worked and worked and worked,” Melissa says, but she couldn’t quite get on her feet. Her situation grew more and more precarious. Finally, last November, Melissa and her children sought help at Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida.
They became guests at our Center for Women and Families, which provides safe temporary shelter, nutritious meals, and other help focused on helping families get into their own homes.
Like all of our guests, Melissa began working immediately on a housing action plan. She identified the barriers and then developed a plan to overcome them.
In June, it happened. With help from her Housing Specialist, Olivia, Melissa received funding that covered her rent, security deposit, utilities, moving expenses, and basic furnishings. It got her “over the hump” and into a home!
Melissa says, “If I take anything from my experience here, it’s that it’s okay to
have a hand up as long as you’re not waiting for a hand-out.”
So many of our guests have stories just like this! They want
to make it on their own.
They just need a boost.
That’s what the kindness of giving provides.
I could go on and on, telling you about the miraculous transformations our donors have helped to make possible. The point is, they represent a pillar of our community. They've gone above and beyond. And that’s so important! We sincerely and deeply appreciate our donors!
