Dawn and Miracle's Story
"I'm thankful that the Coalition has programs that can help families like me. We are truly blessed beyond our measure."
"I
love my job," says Brenda, Housing Manager of the Coalition's Rapid
Re-Housing program. "Seeing the reaction of a family who just signed the
paperwork to their new home is so wonderful to be a part of."
Every day when she comes to work, her goal is to help families transition out of homelessness and into permanent housing.
Since its launch in 2017 – through the support of the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation, Orlando Sentinel Family Fund and the McCormick Foundation – the program has changed the lives of fourteen families and continues to help more each day.
Through the Coalition's Rapid Re-Housing program, Brenda quickly finds housing for families experiencing homelessness by providing time-limited financial assistance and targeted supportive services.
Dawn and her two-year-old daughter, Miracle, know first-hand what it's like to have their lives transformed by this Housing First program.
They were evicted from their apartment after learning that their roommate was not using Dawn's portion of the rent to pay the landlord, but instead using the money for her own personal expenses.
Before Dawn could find an alternative living situation, they had no other option but to sleep in their car.
"We didn't have anywhere to go," Dawn recalls. "I tried to keep Miracle as comfortable as I could in the backseat of the car. Honestly, the only thing I knew to do was pray that there was something out there that could help us."
It wasn't long before Dawn called the Coalition and was welcomed into the Center for Women and Families. From there, she entered the Rapid Re-Housing Program, where she met Brenda.
Brenda says, "While my clients are with me, we work on making budgets and creating goals for the future."
Another key aspect of Brenda’s role is to build relationships with property managers and landlords.
"A lot of the families come to me with past evictions or things in their background that can cause some roadblocks," she explains. "To get through that barrier, I assure the landlords that my clients will have me by their side supporting them. I also make it a point to thank them because without them giving these families a second chance, they would have nowhere to go."
Within a month of becoming homeless and living in their car, Brenda handed over the keys to Dawn’s new apartment.
"I'm thankful that the Coalition has programs that can help families like me. We are truly blessed beyond our measure," Dawn adds.
Dawn and Miracle are not only settling into their new lives, they are thriving.
"Miracle is doing great in daycare," says Dawn. "As soon as she's in school longer during the day, I'm going to school for health occupation. I'm looking forward to providing a better life for me and my daughter."
