Anna's Story
"I'm so happy that they are doing well and that their education doesn’t have to be compromised because of our situation."
Ever since Anna Ramirez, a single mother at the Coalition, enrolled her three youngest children in the on-site Early Childhood Development Center, she has noticed a significant change.
"They are all doing so well and communicating which wasn’t happening before," Anna says. "In particular, my 4-year-old, Jayden talks more than he ever used to. He had a speech delay, but now he knows so many words as well as his colors and numbers."
Before arriving at the Coalition, Anna and her children found themselves without a home when her husband, at the time, lost his job.
"My husband made the only income we had. When he lost it, I panicked because we literally had no other place to go." Anna searched for different options and found help at the Center for Women and Families where she connected with her case manager who focused on helping the family get into housing as quickly as possible through the community-wide Rapid Re-Housing Program.
One of the first items on the checklist was to send the children to the Early Childhood Development Center. "When Gavin, Jayden and Angelina first came in, they were not very sociable with their classmates and didn’t interact much with them," says Vanity Jeffrey, classroom instructor at the Early Childhood Development Center. "We started doing more activities that involved social interaction and since then, they have grown tremendously."
In addition to the improvements made to their social and communication skills, they are also learning things like days of the week and counting numbers that will prepare them for elementary school and beyond.
"I'm so happy that they are doing well and that their education doesn’t have to be compromised because of our situation," Anna says.
"It just makes me proud because I know that I am making a difference," Vanity adds. "It brings me joy when I see them growing and learning. I love teaching."
