Kevin's Story
Kevin never thought an injury at work would eventually lead to homelessness.
Kevin never thought an injury at work would eventually lead to homelessness.
Before moving to Central Florida, Kevin worked at a circus for nearly 15 years. "I enjoyed every minute of it. The people that I worked with were more like family and I earned enough to provide for myself and my children."
One day, a seemingly insignificant moment changed everything. "I hit my leg against one of the stadium seats," he tells us. "At the time, I thought it was no big deal at all. I just worked through the pain and tried not to pay it any mind."
As the weeks went by, the pain in his leg worsened to the point he could no longer walk. Kevin finally went to the emergency room and found out that his leg was not only infected, but the injury had developed into a chronic ulcer that can takes years to heal and, in some cases, causes permanent damage.
When he was released from the hospital, Kevin found himself in a desperate situation. He couldn't go back to work due to his injury, so he turned to a friend in Orlando for help while he figured out his next step.
"That ended up not working out," Kevin says. "There I was in a new city with nowhere to go. The community I had was gone and all of my plans fell through. I only had enough money to stay in a motel for a few days."
He researched options and stayed at a local shelter for a few months until he was referred to the Coalition's Men’s Service Center. The moment he arrived, he began working with his case manager, Malik, to develop a housing plan.
"He gave it to me straight when he said, 'My job is to get you into housing and get you out of here.' The more I talked to my case manager, the more he encouraged me to keep believing that good things would happen."
Malik quickly connected Kevin to resources for medical treatment, and advocated on his behalf to obtain housing. Within a year, he moved into his own home through Healthcare Center for the Homeless' Permanent Supportive Housing program which provides non-time-limited affordable housing assistance with wrap around supportive services for chronically homeless individuals who often have disabilities.
"Sometimes things happen in life that are out of your control, and you have to let go of your pride and accept the help that you need. I'm glad I did," Kevin says.
When asked what it's like to finally be in a home of his own, he says, "Being in my own place is unbelievable. I'm able to move forward with my life now."
