James and Nicole

In the scorching heat of summer, James and Nicole found themselves living in their car after everything they had was suddenly taken away from them.

Three and a half weeks earlier, the couple had just settled into their new rental home when they received a notice from the City of Cocoa deeming their house uninhabitable.

"We found out that the lady from the realty company was hiding the fact that the house was unsafe to live in," James explains. "The city gave us 72 hours to vacate the property."

"I was mentally to the point where I didn't think that I was going to be able to get us out of this situation or save our life together," says James. "I told Nicole that she might want to think about getting life insurance on me. I just couldn't keep doing it to be honest. It was the only way I could see to give her the life that she deserves."

In one final attempt to get help, James called the Coalition's Intake Center and, on the other end of the line was Andrea Alexander, Diversion Case Manager.

Andrea immediately reached out to a property manager who she knew would help. Today, James and Nicole are grateful to have a home once again.

"It's about so much more than just the house," says James. “It's more of a sense that you're worth somebody's help. I want to live the rest of my life now because I'm not ashamed to look at myself in the mirror anymore. I'm able to take a breath and no matter if it's a good day or a bad day, I want to put my best foot forward."
