Event with Danny Wuerffel Raises $60,000 for Homeless
ORLANDO, Fla. — (September 23, 2008)—Local football hero Danny Wuerffel’s story of his journey from playing football to helping revitalize impoverished neighborhoods in New Orleans helped the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, Inc. raise nearly $60,000 for its programs and services at the 3rd Annual Celebration on September 18, 2008. This year’s lunch time event focused on homeless families with children, as the Coalition provides services to nearly 200 children on any given night. Their average age is seven years old.
The Annual Celebration also paid tribute to community leaders who have made extraordinary contributions toward Coalition for the Homeless’ mission over the past year. Darden Restaurants was honored with the 2008 Corporate Partner Award; MIX 105.1 radio was honored with the 2008 Media Partner Award; the 2008 Heart for the Homeless Award was presented to Bill Owen, and the 2008 Volunteer Award was presented to Jeffrey Miller.
The event was hosted by Sunny 105.9 afternoon show personality Bob Berry and WESH Channel 2 Sports Anchor Pat Clarke. Added features were the display of artwork created by homeless children as part of the Art By Coalition Children (ABCs) Program and remarks by two of the Coalition’s teenaged clients. Major event sponsors included Sunny 105.9 radio, Etech, Harriett Lake, First Baptist Church of Orlando, and the Wyndham Orlando Resort.
