Feeling forced to flee an irresponsible husband, Barbara, along with her four children, embarked on a search for a better life.
Planning the move from New York to Orlando with no income, transportation, or shelter, Barbara unwillingly acknowledged that her three older children would be better off in Puerto Rico with family for the time being. That left Barbara and her newborn baby, Ricky, alone in a new city.
Barbara and Ricky were admitted into the Coalition’s Center for Women and Families immediately after their flight to Orlando. Barbara was soon working three jobs, and during his mother’s frequent hours at work, Ricky was placed in the care of the Coalition’s fully-licensed daycare.
Within eight months, Barbara had saved enough for a car and an apartment. Through the Coalition’s Scattered Site Housing Program, a portion of her rent was covered for a little over one year. Barbara was later promoted to a manager position at her full-time job.
After months apart, Barbara was able to bring her kids home. Her family is finally together again and ready for a fresh start. |
